Our history

D.J. Carmichael dates back to 1896, a time of strong investment interest in Western Australia associated with one of the world's major gold discoveries, the so-called Golden Mile at Kalgoorlie – east of Perth.
Donald J. Carmichael, of Scottish origin, emigrated to Western Australia from Dunedin in New Zealand and in 1896 established his firm in Kalgoorlie. He also acted as the representative of S.C. Ward & Co the leading Adelaide stockbroker of the era.

Head Of Research
Paul joined DJ Carmichael in 2006 as a Resource Analyst. Paul has an honours degree in Geology, is a member of the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and has 16 years experience in the mining industry in exploration, open pit, undergound and operational roles, both in Australia and overseas. Before joining the company, he was Chief Geologist and Evaluations Manager at Placer Dome's Granny Smith mine. Paul has a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment, with the Financial Services Institute of Australasia.


Oliver Stevens- Industrial Analyst Oliver Stevens
Senior Industrial Analyst
Oliver works as an Analyst within the Industrials team at DJ Carmichael. Prior to joining the firm Oliver spent five years with a boutique funds management business where he initially worked as an Analyst prior to becoming a Fund Manager, responsible for managing a fund focussed on investments in ASX-listed Small Industrial companies. Oliver holds an MBA from the University of Western Australia along with a Bachelor of Commerce (Economics & Finance) from Curtin University


Edwin Balseco - Oil and Gas Analyst Edwin Bulseco
Oil and Gas Analyst
Edwin has joined DJ Carmichael as an Oil and Gas Analyst having previously worked for as an Oil & Gas Analyst with another Perth based stockbroker and 7 years with Royal Dutch Shell (Shell). Edwin was posted overseas for most of his time with Shell and has worked in Brunei, Nigeria and in Perth (Shell Development Australia). Edwin worked the majority of this time in Corporate/Strategic planning and Petroleum Economics and recently held the position of East Browse Petroleum Economist working on the Prelude Floating LNG project. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree.
