D.J. Carmichael ...
...dates back to 1896, a time of strong investment
interest in Western Australia associated with one of the world's
major gold discoveries, the so-called Golden Mile at Kalgoorlie,
east of Perth.
Donald J. Carmichael, of Scottish origin, emigrated to Western
Australia from Dunedin in New Zealand and in 1896 established
his firm in Kalgoorlie. He also acted as the representative
of S.C. Ward & Co the leading Adelaide stockbroker of the
era.
His business success led to expansion and the eventual takeover
of the Perth offices of S.C. Ward & Co in 1915. Often described
as the "Canny Old Scot" Carmichael held the position
of Chairman of the Perth Stock Exchange from 1913 to 1928 and
remained active in the business until his death in 1942.
The changing of the guard following Carmichael's death resulted
in the establishment of a partnership between Lex Lamb, who
joined the firm in 1915 and George Maloney who started as an
office boy in 1910. Lex Lamb was noted for his "rod of
iron" chairmanship of the Perth Stock Exchange for 22 years
while George and his brother Jim were considered two of the
more prominent stockbrokers of their time in Western Australia.
Following the retirement of Lex Lamb in 1963, Don Maloney (son
of George) took over the reins of D.J. Carmichael.
Don was to lead the firm for over 3 decades, including the hectic
days of the nickel boom of 1969-1971 and the "crash"
of 1987. During Don's stewardship the industry saw many changes
from the days of hand written ledgers and "call room"
trading through to the sophisticated computerisation of all
facets of the business in the 1990s.
As one of Western Australia's oldest brokerage houses, the
Carmichael name has a century long history of providing professional
service to its clients. This tradition continues as the Company
sets itself to meet the challenges of the 21st century and its
second 100 years.
